What is the meaning of Criminal Law? 

Criminal law is the branch of public law that refers to crimes and penalties established within the penal code and therefore part of the Penal Law. Laws that must be respected and once violated evoke sanctions, both for individuals and, in some cases, legal entities. 

Criminal law tends to expand and break into areas that were previously reserved for other branches of law, mainly Civil and Administrative Law. The successive reforms of the Criminal Code have increased the number of conducts that a criminal lawyer must know. This area of law also has the duty to protect society from corporate crimes, tax crimes, fraud, crimes against property, crimes against consumers, illegal party financing, bribery, embezzlement, administrative malfeasance, money laundering, influence peddling, and corporate corruption.

Likewise, the introduction of the criminal liability of legal persons in the Criminal Code in 2010 and its subsequent reform in 2015, which specified important concepts such as “due control” of the company, have given a great boost to criminal law and, specifically, to compliance or criminal regulatory compliance.
